About Ballito — Fishing Local Knowledge
Ballito and the surrounding North Coast offer surf and rock fishing off the town beaches, the rocky points around Salmon Bay and Thompson's Bay, and the nearby river mouths. The warm water gives it a subtropical species mix, and the coast comes alive during the winter sardine run.
Anglers target shad (elf), kob (kabeljou), garrick (leervis), pompano and stumpnose off the surf, with kingfish and other warm-water species around the rocks in the warmer months. Shad take spoons and fresh sardine in the backline, garrick respond to live bait and spoons worked along the points, and kob prefer live or fresh bait at dawn and dusk. During the sardine run gamefish, shad and garrick crowd inshore. A recreational fishing permit is required, and shad has a closed season and bag limits, so check current regulations before you fish.
