South Africa Rainfall Radar

Weather charts provide a visual representation of current atmospheric conditions across South Africa and Africa. These charts help meteorologists and the public understand weather patterns, frontal systems, and temperature variations to better plan outdoor activities and appropriate sun protection.

Understanding the Rainfall Radar

Weather radar measures energy bounced back off raindrops, hail and snow, so it shows where precipitation is actually falling right now — a live picture of the rain, not a forecast.

  • Colour is intensity: light blue and green are drizzle to light rain; yellow and orange are moderate to heavy showers; red means intense downpours or storms.
  • The loop shows movement: the last ~2 hours reveal which way the rain is tracking and whether it is building or clearing.
  • Coverage: radar reads best near the radar sites and can under-report over remote areas and high ground.
  • Refreshed every 20 minutes from the RainViewer network.

Use the radar to time outdoor activities — and remember UV stays high even under cloud, so keep your sunscreen on between the showers.

Weather & Sun Protection Considerations

While monitoring weather conditions is important, it's essential to remember that UV radiation levels don't always correlate with temperature or cloud cover:

  • UV radiation can be high even on cool or cloudy days
  • High-pressure systems typically bring clear skies and increased UV exposure
  • Cold fronts may temporarily reduce UV levels but can be followed by intense clear conditions
  • Always check the UV Index along with weather charts for complete protection
