Durban offers pier, surf, harbour and offshore fishing in one warm-water city. Anglers fish off the Golden Mile piers and beaches, around the harbour and the Bluff, while ski-boats and charters head out for the deeper reefs and gamefish that this subtropical coast is known for.

Off the piers and surf, expect shad (elf), kob (kabeljou), garrick (leervis), pompano, stumpnose and kingfish, with the warm months bringing more gamefish inshore. Shad take spoons and fresh sardine in the backline, garrick respond to live bait and spoons along the piers, and kob prefer live or fresh bait at dawn and dusk. Offshore boats target king mackerel (couta), tuna, dorado and other gamefish, especially around the winter sardine run. A recreational fishing permit is required; shad has a closed season and bag limits, so check current regulations, bag and size limits before keeping fish.
