About Yzerfontein — Fishing Local Knowledge

Yzerfontein's rocky headland, deep gullies and endless beaches make it a well-loved West Coast angling destination for both rock and surf fishermen.

The gullies and points south of the harbour produce good galjoen in winter and hottentot throughout the year, while the beaches and gullies give up kob, white steenbras, white stumpnose, blacktail, shad (elf) and garrick (leervis) in season. Snoek and West Coast rock lobster are famous local catches. White mussel, sardine, chokka and red bait are standard baits, and galjoen (a protected, seasonal species, so check current regulations) is best worked off the rocky ledges. The higher tide stages, especially early morning, tend to fish best.
