Bloubergstrand stretches along Table Bay about 20 km north of central Cape Town and is famous for its postcard views of Table Mountain across the water. Big Bay and Little Bay are the focal beaches, backed by a lively strip of cafes and surf shops.
Big Bay is a sandy beach break with peaks that suit beginners and intermediates, but the area is far better known as Cape Town's kitesurfing and windsurfing capital thanks to the strong, reliable summer south-easter. Surf works on a south-west swell in lighter or south-east winds; when the wind is up it becomes all about the kites. Hazards are cold Atlantic water, strong wind chop and busy line-ups shared with kitesurfers.
