About Mdumbi — Surf Local Knowledge
Mdumbi lies on the Wild Coast between Coffee Bay and Port St Johns, a deeply rural stretch of rolling hills, river valleys and empty beaches reached by dirt road. There is little here but a backpackers, a scattering of homesteads and one of the finest waves in the country, which is exactly the appeal for those who make the trip.
Mdumbi Point is a world-class right-hand point break, widely rated among South Africa's best; when the sandbanks are right it can run close to a kilometre. It needs a good south to south-west groundswell and a west to north-west offshore, and it handles size well, making it an intermediate-to-advanced wave with a long, fast wall. Even at its best it stays uncrowded. As with all the Wild Coast, there are no lifeguards, and rips, rocks and sharks demand respect and self-reliance.
