About Victoria Bay — Surf Local Knowledge
Victoria Bay is a tiny, steep-sided cove tucked into the cliffs just east of George, ringed by a handful of cottages and a slipway. It is the Garden Route's best-loved point, a natural rock amphitheatre that surfers simply call Vic Bay.
The wave is a right-hand point break peeling over a rock-and-sand bottom, running up to around 300 metres on its day and holding size from waist-high to well overhead. It works best on a south to south-west swell with offshore north to north-westerly winds, and is good across the tides though the inside shelf gets shallow at low. Suited to intermediate and advanced surfers; the take-off and paddle-out can be tricky, the line-up is small and competitive, and it draws crowds and strong localism when it is firing.
