About Coffee Bay — Fishing Local Knowledge
The Wild Coast around Coffee Bay is prime rock, surf and estuary fishing country, with rugged points, reef gullies and the river mouth all within reach. It is remote, uncrowded and rewarding, but you fish it self-sufficiently — access is rough and there are no facilities on the ledges.
Rock and surf anglers target kob (kabeljou), bronze bream, blacktail, shad (elf) and seasonal galjoen, while garrick (leervis) and gamefish move through on the sardine run in winter, when predators follow the shoals up this coast. Bronze bream take redbait, chokka and crab off the ledges; kob and garrick respond to live bait and fresh sardine fished into the deeper gullies at dawn and dusk. The river mouth adds spotted grunter on prawn. Hole in the Wall and the coastline towards Mdumbi offer more spots. Check current bag and size limits; galjoen is protected.
