About Elands Bay — Fishing Local Knowledge

Elands Bay offers classic West Coast rock-and-surf angling, from the gullies and ledges around Baboon Point to the long sandy beaches and the Verlorenvlei river mouth.

Target species on this cold Benguela stretch include kob (kabeljou), white steenbras, galjoen (a protected linefish with a closed season and strict bag limits, so check current regulations), hottentot, blacktail and, in season, snoek and the odd geelbek. Fresh or live bait such as sardine, chokka (squid) and white mussel works well, while galjoen anglers favour red bait and mussel off the rocky ledges. Winter and early spring, fished around the higher stages of the tide, are generally the most productive times here.
