About Elands Bay — Surf Local Knowledge

Elands Bay sits on the wild Cape West Coast, roughly 220 km north of Cape Town, tucked beneath the rocky Baboon Point headland where the Verlorenvlei estuary meets the cold Atlantic. It is a remote, laid-back crayfishing and farming village with a big, empty-feeling bay.

The main draw is a long left-hand point break that peels off a kelp-covered rock shelf into the bay, working best on a solid south-west to west groundswell with a south-east offshore wind and a lower tide, when it offers long, sometimes hollow walls. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers and can get crowded when it is firing. Hazards include very cold water, thick kelp, sharp rocks and strong currents near the point.
