About Nahoon Reef — Fishing Local Knowledge
The rocky point and reef ledges that make Nahoon such a good wave also create productive rock-and-ledge fishing, worked off the stones into the surrounding gullies and deeper reef water, with the nearby Nahoon River mouth adding estuary options a short distance away.
Typical targets are bronze bream, blacktail, kob (kabeljou), shad (elf) and seasonal galjoen off the rocks and surf, with garrick (leervis) passing through on the run. Bronze bream take redbait, chokka and crab fished tight to the ledges, while kob respond to live bait and fresh sardine in the deeper gullies around dawn, dusk and the tide change. The estuary side holds spotted grunter on prawn baits. Take care fishing the rocks in any swell, mind the shark presence, and check current bag and size limits — galjoen is a protected species with a closed season.
