About Port Elizabeth — Fishing Local Knowledge

Algoa Bay is one of the Eastern Cape's most productive fishing grounds, offering surf, rock, pier and boat angling all within reach of the city. Anglers fish the beaches and gullies of Summerstrand and Sardinia Bay, the harbour walls and river mouths, while ski-boats push out to reefs and pinnacles in the bay for deeper species.

Off the beaches and rocks, expect kob (kabeljou), spotted grunter, shad (elf), bronze bream, blacktail and seasonal galjoen, with garrick (leervis) hunting the backline in the cooler months. Grunter fall to prawn and mud-prawn worked on the sand banks, while kob prefer live bait, chokka or fresh sardine fished at dawn, dusk and around the tide change. Offshore boats target geelbek, kob and gamefish. Galjoen is protected with a closed season, so check current bag and size limits and any permit requirements before you fish.
