About Port Elizabeth — Surf Local Knowledge

Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, wraps around Algoa Bay and is the largest city on this stretch of the Eastern Cape coast. The curve of the bay gives it a run of beaches from the sheltered corner at King's Beach and Hobie Beach through Pollok Beach and out to the more exposed reefs and points beyond Summerstrand, so there is nearly always somewhere working in a given wind.

The city offers a real mix: gentle, forgiving beach breaks in the protected bay corner that suit beginners and longboarders, and punchier reef and point setups further out for stronger surfers. South to south-west groundswells feed the coast, offshore winds tend to come from the west through north-west, and winter is the most consistent season. Crowds gather at the popular in-town beaches; further out expect rocks, rips and the usual open-ocean shark awareness. Jeffreys Bay lies a short drive to the west for world-class points.
