About Scottburgh — Fishing Local Knowledge
Scottburgh offers surf, rock and estuary fishing along the South Coast, with the beaches, rocky points and the Mpambanyoni River mouth all fished. It is best known as a front-row seat for the annual sardine run, when netters make big hauls right off the main beach and the whole food chain follows the shoals inshore.
Year-round targets include shad (elf), kob (kabeljou), garrick (leervis), bronze bream and pompano (wave garrick) off the surf and rocks. During the winter sardine run — roughly May to July — the action explodes, with garrick, shad, gamefish, sharks, dolphins and birds all crowding the bait. Shad and garrick take spoons, live bait and fresh sardine worked in the backline, while kob prefer live bait at dawn and dusk. The estuary adds spotted grunter on prawn. A fishing permit is required and shad has a closed season and bag limits, so check current regulations before you fish.
