About St Lucia — Fishing Local Knowledge
The St Lucia estuary is a legendary fishery, but it lies inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and marine protected area, so fishing is tightly regulated. Rod-and-line is the only permitted method in the estuary, artificial lures and cast-nets are not allowed, and a compulsory recreational fishing permit plus the park's own rules apply — always confirm current regulations before you fish. Beware hippos and crocodiles in the estuary.
The estuary and surf hold kob (kabeljou), spotted grunter, perch and shad (elf), which count together towards the overall bag limit; all shad caught between 1 September and 30 November must be released alive. Grunter take prawn worked over the banks and kob respond to live bait along the deeper channels. Cape Vidal, north within the park, offers rock and surf fishing and access to gamefish, and Sodwana Bay lies further up the coast. Check current bag and size limits and all park permit requirements.
