Muizenberg sits in the north-western corner of False Bay, about 25 km from central Cape Town, with its brightly painted beach huts and long, gently sloping sandy beach. Surfers' Corner is the heart of Cape Town's learn-to-surf scene.
It is a soft, forgiving beach break producing long, mellow rollers that are ideal for beginners, longboarders and improvers, and it is backed by surf schools, rental kiosks and cafes. It works on a south to south-west swell and is cleanest on north-westerly (often winter) winds, and the False Bay water is warmer than the Atlantic side. Hazards are gentle, though rip currents form and the bay has sharks, so shark-spotters and a flag system operate on the beach.
